"Educational opportunities must be accessible and of the highest quality for all children. This is best handled on a local level and it should be a priority of the State Board of Education to ensure that choice, reform, and accountability are focused on this outcome."
CHOICE - Choice in education can improve the current education process and help transform the present system. Parents and families should be in charge of their children's education and have access to opportunities to meet their goals.
REFORM - Reform is intended to enable improvement in present methods. Currently there are many groups and entities trying to identify reforms at many levels. This indicates the importance of education and the inadequacy of current methods to reach the desired goals. Each reform phase has come with strings attached in the form of regulatory requirements mandating districts to focus a large portion of dollars outside of the classroom in order to prove accountability/compliance. Reform should focus on educating kids, and accountability/compliance should be meaningful to teacher, student and family.
ACCOUNTABILITY - Accountability should be in two forms, student learning and financial. The state board recently adopted Common Core Standards and most districts have been busy aligning their curriculum to match these standards. Now is the time to evaluate state testing to measure what students know and to provide real-time, focused information to teachers and parents so effective decisions can be made regarding each students education. Paired with this is financial accountability that enables taxpayers to evaluate educational spending on a state, district and school level.
